Tea Estates, Bungalows & Ceylon Railways

The British Ceylon Collection

Ceylon earned its name in the hills. When coffee failed in the 1870s, the British planted tea across the highlands, and with it came the bungalows, the clubs and the most beautiful mountain railway in Asia. To travel the hill country today is to step directly into that world — and to drink the result on its own veranda.

Living in a planter’s bungalow

We place you in restored 1890s estate bungalows above tea gardens like Castlereagh, Norwood and Adisham — log fires against the highland chill, butlers who have served the house for years, gardens of agapanthus and the silence of the hills. Days drift between estate walks, a factory tour, an unhurried tasting, and long afternoons with a book and a pot of the estate’s own leaf. It is the most restful chapter of any Ceylon journey.

The great railway

The line the British drove through the mountains from Kandy to Badulla is, by common consent, one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys — hours of waterfalls, cloud forest, tunnels and tea pickers framed in an open carriage door. We book the right seats on the right segment so it stays a pleasure rather than an endurance, and meet you at the far end.

The hill stations

Nuwara Eliya still wears its colonial dress — the Hill Club, the racecourse, the half-timbered post office and the cool, damp air the British so prized as an escape from the plains. Higher again, Horton Plains delivers a dawn hike to World’s End, a sheer drop with a view to the distant coast. The hills are where Ceylon slows you down, exactly as they were meant to.
