Trincomalee
When the south coast is under monsoon, the east is in glorious sunshine — and Trincomalee, with one of the world’s great natural harbours, offers the widest, calmest beaches in the country.
The other season
Trincomalee turns the Sri Lankan calendar on its head: from May to September, while the south is wet, Trinco’s beaches at Nilaveli and Uppuveli are flat, warm and almost empty. It is the answer for a summer holiday to the island.
Things to do
Snorkel or dive the coral of Pigeon Island just offshore, watch blue and sperm whales in season, and climb to the cliff-top Koneswaram temple above the harbour. The town itself carries layers of Tamil, colonial and naval history.
A quieter coast
The east is less developed than the south, which is precisely its appeal — long stretches of sand, simple beach hotels, and a slower pace. It pairs beautifully with a wildlife or cultural loop coming across from the centre.
Around Trincomalee
Beyond the beaches, Trinco rewards exploration: the cliff-top Koneswaram temple on Swami Rock, the colonial Fort Frederick with its roaming deer, the hot wells at Kanniya, and the wide natural harbour that drew every navy from the Portuguese to the British. Inland lie the elephant-rich tanks and the road back to the Cultural Triangle, making Trincomalee a natural finish to a summer trip that began among the ancient cities.
Practical information
Getting there
About 5–6 hours from Colombo by car, or an easy drive from the Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, 3 hours). A domestic flight is possible.
Where to stay
Beach hotels and a few boutique properties along Nilaveli and Uppuveli; standards are simpler than the south but improving.
What to eat
Outstanding fresh seafood and a distinct east-coast, Tamil-influenced cuisine — try the crab and the cuttlefish.
Best time to visit
May–September, the east-coast dry season. Whale watching is best from around June to August.
“Come here in our summer, when everyone else is chasing a wet south coast. Trinco in July is the secret the guidebooks bury on page forty.”
