Ella

Destination Guide

Cradled in the southern hills at the end of the famous railway, Ella is the relaxed heart of tea country — a small town of viewpoints, easy walks, waterfalls and the slow rhythm of the highlands.

Why everyone loves Ella

Ella earns its popularity: cool air, big views down the Ella Gap toward the southern plains, and walks for every level of energy. It is the kind of place travellers plan to stay two nights and end up staying four.

Things to do

Walk up Little Adam’s Peak for a gentle hour to a panoramic summit, see the much-photographed Nine Arch Bridge as a train crosses it, and hike to Ravana Falls or up the steeper Ella Rock. The arrival by train from Nanu Oya is one of the great railway journeys.

Tea all around

Ella sits among working estates; a factory tour and tasting explains why high-grown Ceylon tea is so prized. The surrounding hills hold viewpoints like Lipton’s Seat near Haputale, an easy excursion for a clear morning.

How long, and onward

Two nights is the sweet spot — time for a couple of walks, a tea factory and a slow morning, without rushing. Ella sits at the southern end of the hill-country railway, so it pairs naturally with Nuwara Eliya and Kandy above, and drops down easily to Yala and the south coast below. Many travellers treat it as the relaxed pause between the highlands and the beach, and find it the part of the trip they most want to extend.

Practical information

Getting there

The scenic train from Kandy/Nanu Oya is the classic approach (around 6–7 hours total; we book the best segment). By car, it is roughly 5–6 hours from Colombo.

Where to stay

Small hotels and eco-lodges perched on the hillsides give the best views; a few restored bungalows sit on nearby estates for more seclusion.

What to eat

Hearty hill-country curries, fresh roti, and the traveller cafés along the main street. Buy estate tea direct from a factory to take home.

Best time to visit

January–April for the clearest skies. The hills are cool year-round — bring a layer even in summer.

Ajit’s tip

Skip the crowded mid-morning bridge shot. Walk out for the first train of the day instead — soft light, mist in the valley, and almost nobody there.
